This research investigates a structural paradox at the heart of contemporary populist politics: populist movements simultaneously reject and claim to defend the constitutional order. Rather than treating this as a rhetorical tactic, the project theorizes it as a structural necessity \u2014 any populist movement operating within a parliamentary democracy must occupy the language of constitutional guardianship, since democratic legitimacy cannot be claimed from outside the constitutional order.\n\nDrawing on Paula Diehl's concept of the political imaginary, Carl Schmitt's Verfassung\/Verfassungsgesetz concepts, and Karl Loewenstein's militant democracy framework, the research examines how the Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland (AfD) semantically evacuates and ethno-nationally refills the unamendable constitutional concepts enshrined in Article 79\/3 of the German Basic Law: human dignity, democracy, and the federal order. The foundational literature further informs the theoretical argument on the relationship between populism and constitutionalism, including the contributions of Paul Blokker, Crist\u00f3bal Rovira Kaltwasser, and Yves M\u00e9ny and Yves Surel. Methodologically, the study employs immanent critique and conceptual genealogy within an interpretivist framework, using AfD's constitutional discourse as a case in point rather than a systematic empirical dataset.<\/p>

The project makes four contributions to the literature on populism, constitutionalism, and democratic theory: a structural account of the double paradox; a diagnosis of an internal vulnerability within militant democracy theory; an operationalization of the political imaginary concept in constitutional discourse analysis; and an analytical template applicable to comparable populist movements across Europe. Beyond its theoretical contributions, the research aspires to inform policy debates on how militant democracy instruments can be strengthened in the face of populist challenges, a question of acute relevance to contemporary European democracies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Right-wing populist discourses are a globally observable phenomenon, but their manifestations and mechanisms of influence vary considerably depending on the respective political and media context. Japan is regarded as politically exceptionally stable, having been dominated for decades by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). In Western Japan studies, the country is therefore sometimes considered to have a certain degree of immunity to right-wing populist tendencies. Against this backdrop, the success of the Japan Restoration Party (JRP) is particularly remarkable. In 2012, under the leadership of the controversial right-wing populist Hashimoto T\u014dru, the party succeeded in being elected to the House of Representatives as the third-strongest political force, despite having only recently been established. This doctoral project takes this departure from prevailing assumptions as an opportunity to analyze the discursive reception of the JRP in digital public spheres and thereby offer new perspectives on the dynamics of right-wing populist mobilization in the Japanese context.<\/span><\/div>

The study focuses on how the political agenda and communication strategies of the Japan Restoration Party (JRP) were negotiated in public discourse and which political, social, and media conditions contributed to its popularity. Theoretically, the project draws on approaches that take into account the variability of right-wing populist politics across different political and regional contexts. The specific characteristics of right-wing populist discourses in Japan are situated within this broader context in order to trace developments in public reception over a period of two years. Methodologically, the study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches: more than 100,000 Japanese-language blog posts from 2012 to 2014 are analyzed thematically using topic modeling. This provides the basis for an in-depth qualitative content analysis of selected posts, aimed at identifying key argumentative patterns and interpretive frames in the public debate surrounding the JRP.<\/span><\/div>

The project examines the gendered narratives of the so-called radical New Right. Using the concept of narrative identity, it focusses on the practices of self-telling. The project aims to better under the intertwined appeals to gender and nation within the current right-wing mobilizations by considering their autobiographical storytelling. The main thesis is, that the narrative self-interpretations of the radical New Right can be understood as an act of masculinist (re-)sovereignization in the struggles to (re-)define the nation; an attempt to regain the interpretative power by telling stories about and trough gender.<\/p>

Based on the assumption that right-wing actors in Germany are currently pursuing an authoritarian-national reconstruction of the country, the project demonstrates the significance of gendered narratives for this authoritarian turn. With the approach of narrative identity, it uses a concept, which has so far been developed primarily in philosophy and social psychology for investigating personal identity, and extends it to research on collective identities. Thereby it shows how right-wing politicians use certain constructs of masculinity to make individual as well as collective identity offers, that are well able to elaborate the common sense of the people. Using selected autobiographical texts of the radical New Right, the project shows that their practices of self-telling are gendered in two ways: On the one hand, gendered stories of the nation are told; on the other hand, the storytelling itself can be understood as a masculinist and sovereignizing practice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This work delves into the paradox of neoliberal capitalism\u2019s continued dominance despite facing critique and crises. It critically assesses the limitations of existing literature that prematurely proclaims neoliberalism\u2019s demise, particularly in the context of its persistence through global challenges such as the Covid-19-pandemic and financial crises. The concept of hegemony takes center stage, highlighting its crucial role in shaping societal norms and constraining alternative visions. Employing Political Discourse Theory (PDT), specifically drawing from Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe\u2019s contributions, the study offers a comprehensive exploration of change and hegemony within the neoliberal framework. Alongside theoretical insights, the research conducts empirical analyses of nearly 300,000 tweets from 2020-2023, examining the intersections of neoliberalism, the pandemic, and global protest movements marked by populist characteristics. Neoliberal capitalism is portrayed as a hegemonic force molding discursive structures that impact societal perceptions and behaviors. The analysis delves into the apparent contradiction between neoliberalism's perceived crisis mode and its resilience, emphasizing the role of crises in revitalizing and restructuring its hegemonic influence. The examination of crises encompasses both economic and discursive perspectives, shedding light on neoliberalism's adaptive capacity. Despite widespread calls for change and wealth redistribution during global protests from Chile and France to Thailand, the discursive system of neoliberalism remained remarkably stable. In ihrer Promotion untersucht Lena Weige die Beziehung zwischen rechtspopulistischer Performativit\u00e4t und repr\u00e4sentativer Demokratie aus einer politiktheoretischen Perspektive. Ausgangspunkt ihrer \u00dcberlegungen ist ein mehrdimensionales Verst\u00e4ndnis des Populismus als politisches Ph\u00e4nomen, wobei der Fokus auf der Dimension des Populismus als politische Performance liegt. Mit dem Begriff der Performance geht ihre konzeptionelle Auseinandersetzung \u00fcber den von Benjamin Moffitt entwickelten Begriff des Populismus als politischen Stil hinaus, indem sie ausgehend von Filipe Carreira da Silvas und Monica Brito Vieras Konzept des Populismus als politische Logik zus\u00e4tzlich nach der narrativen Struktur (rechts-)populistischer Auftritte fragt. Im ersten Teil der Dissertation entwickelt Lena Weige den Begriff der rechtspopulistischen Performance unter Einbezug der vielf\u00e4ltigen Literatur aus dem Bereich der Performance Studies. Sie besch\u00e4ftigt sich dabei besonders mit der Frage nach der Auspr\u00e4gung oder Typologisierung rechtspopulistischer Performance und Performativit\u00e4t. Gibt es unterschiedliche Formen rechtspopulistischer Performativit\u00e4t und wenn ja, wodurch unterscheiden sich diese? Der zweite Teil ihres Dissertationsvorhabens befasst sich mit der Frage nach dem Verh\u00e4ltnis von rechtspopulistischer Performativit\u00e4t und repr\u00e4sentativer Demokratie.
