<\/i>The International Populism Research Network is based in the Political Theory, History of Ideas and Political Culture section at Kiel University (CAU Kiel). It serves as a platform to facilitate international exchange and initiate publication and research projects on the subject of populism.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>

The network\u2019s activities are centered on new theoretical, qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying the phenomenon of populism worldwide.<\/p>

It is open to other social science and humanities disciplines beyond the field of political science, such as sociology, philosophy, cultural, media and literature studies, ethnology, visual studies, performance studies, law and history.<\/p>

The International Populism Research Network organizes academic events (both in-person and online) at CAU Kiel and in collaboration with partner institutes. These include academic conferences, workshops and panels at national and international conferences, international teaching collaborations and events for the general public.<\/p>

The International Populism Research Network conducts its own research projects and supports doctoral and post doc projects.<\/em><\/p>

The INPR congratulates Katharina Dahlko on the successful defense of her doctoral project on The Public Reception of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Japan. Supervised by Gabriele Vogt and Paula Diehl, the dissertation exemplifies the network\u2019s international approach and fits seamlessly into the current research agenda of its members.<\/p>

The study focuses on the question of how the political agenda and communication strategies of the Japan Restoration Party (JRP) were negotiated in public discourse and which political, social, and media conditions contributed to its popularity. This book introduces a new framework for understanding how the radical right reimagines demographic change as an existential threat. Across Europe and the Americas, low birth rates, immigration, and gender equality are reframed as signs of civilisational decline. This volume explores how radical right actors mobilise fears around fertility, migration, race, family, and sexuality through narratives of crisis, ethnic purity, and control over borders, reproduction, and social norms. It examines conspiracy thinking fuelled by demographic anxiety to justify attacks on gender and sexual rights and reinforce exclusionary ideas of national belonging.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although Latin American democracies have shown considerable resilience, today they face new forms of political polarization and instability. These challenges are closely connected to the legacies of the region\u2019s \u201cleft turn,\u201d which sought to transform entrenched inequalities and social hierarchies in the early twenty-first century. Unprecedented in its scope and duration, the left turn reflected an underlying realignment of political contestation in a highly unequal region. Yet despite notable achievements in addressing social needs, leftist parties struggled to deepen democracy by empowering popular majorities, and they faced powerful elite backlashes.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Through a comparative analysis of seven South American countries, Santiago Anria and Kenneth M. Roberts trace the different origins and trajectories in power of the populist and social democratic currents that emerged within the left turn. Anria and Roberts argue that today\u2019s democratic orders face intensifying polarization and institutional fragility, even where social democratic parties made explicit efforts to build broad coalitions and temper political conflict. They show how activist networks and social movements on the left and the right triggered latent political conflicts and are now reshaping democratic competition and the terms of social inclusion in South American politics.<\/p>
