Luciana Villas Bôas

Luciana Villas Bôas ist Professorin im Fachbereich für Anglo-Germanische Sprachen an der Staatlichen Universität Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) und im Graduiertenprogramm für Germanische Sprachen at der Universität São Paulo. Von November 2024 bis Februar 2025 war sie Gastwissenschaftlerin am Arbeitsbereich Politische Theorie, Ideengeschichte und Politische Kultur der CAU Kiel. In ihrer Forschung untersucht sie die Interaktion zwischen Begriffen und Bildern der Macht und konzentriert sich dabei auf die literarische und intellektuelle Geschichte der frühmodernen Periode. Sie forscht auch zur öffentlichen Erinnerung an den Kolonialismus und zur politischen Ikonographie der Gegenwart.

Storming Parliamentary Buildings in Germany, the US and Brazil:
A Comparative Study in the Political Iconology of the Present

Developed with the support of her host at the CAU, Prof. Paula Diehl, and funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, her current project approaches the storms of the Reichstag in 2020, the US Capitol in 2021 and the Brazilian Congress in 2023 as interrelated events that mounted an attack on the spatial and temporal configuration of democracy. Broadcast on the stage of a globally networked public sphere, they have produced what Aby Warburg has aptly called Schlagbilder, images that have the power to synthesize and intervene in our present political situation. The performative scripts and symbolic repertoires that characterize the storms in Berlin, DC and Brasília invite comparison. Yet there have been surprisingly little attempts at treating them as interconnected events. This research proposal aims at exploring the symbolic outlook and the political meaning of the storms in Berlin, DC and Brasília from an iconographic and iconological perspective. It seeks to examine the material form of their political iconography and thereby shed light on their historicity and intelligibility. Moreover, by approaching the events as synthesizing images, as Schlagbilder, capable of making statements about the established institutional order, the project hopes to gain insight into the symbolic means that shape political action and inflect the contemporary political imaginary.

Mattias Lehtinen

Mattias Lehtinen ist Postdoktorand am Fachbereich für Praktische Philosophie der Universität Helsinki. Von Januar bis Dezember 2025 ist er Gastwissenschaftler am Arbeitsbereich Politische Theorie, Ideengeschichte und Politische Kultur der CAU Kiel. Sein Aufenthalt wird von der Osk. Huttunen Foundation gefördert. In seiner aktuellen Forschung untersucht er die imaginären Grundlagen politischer Rationalität und interessiert sich dabei insbesondere für die imaginären Grundlagen rechtspopulistischer politischer Rationalität. Er arbeitet hauptsächlich mit kontinentaler politischer Philosophie, kritischer Theorie und postphänomenologischem Denken – angewandt auf politische Imagination, radikale Demokratie, politische Ontologie, Polarisierung und antidemokratische politische Pathologien.

Er arbeitet aktuell an einem Forschungsprojekt mit dem Titel „Politische Imagination und die Krise der politischen Rationalität“, welches das Ziel verfolgt, politische Rationalität als eine Facette politischer Imagination neu zu beschreiben und die gegenwärtige politische Polarisierung in liberalen Demokratien als ein Resultat einer vertiefenden Zersplitterung in der Weise, wie wir politische Realität imaginieren, zu deuten. Das Projekt untersucht auch die Formen, in denen politische Rationalität, verstanden als von politischer Imagination ausgehend, rekonstruiert und mit demokratischen Werten und politischem Pluralismus ein Einklang gebracht werden kann, ohne monovalente, dominierende oder unterdrückende Formen der politischen Rationalität durchzusetzen.
