The international Populism Research Network based at Kiel University brings together interdisciplinary expertise from researchers in 13 countries across Europe, North and South America. Its aim is to analyse populist developments on a global scale and provide well-founded perspectives on current political dynamics. The lecture offers insights into key research questions and ongoing projects within the network and highlights its role in academic exchange as well as in transferring knowledge to society.

Populism and Fascism

What are the differences between populism and fascism, and where do they intersect? In this lecture, Prof. Carlos de la Torre from the University of Florida in Gainesville, who’s a leading expert on populism research and currently a visiting scholar at Kiel University, addresses these questions. He examines core elements such as notions of “the people,” leadership styles, and political practice. The discussion also explores how both phenomena relate to democracy, from invoking the will of the people to its gradual undermining.
